TWEAK NEWS NOV 2020
Ignoring our turmoil, the world keeps turning. Autumn colours show the rhythm of natural seasons, which we register, perhaps subliminally, as we see the sun decline, the leaves fall, the damp creep in. The natural world has no consciousness of us, and that could be reassuring, given the nonsense we generate. We take for granted, partly in our sub-conscious, that there will be a cycle of renewal, and are content to await, confident that spring will follow. Well, now we see that more concern is rising, and we see straws in the wind. Those straws, which told of approaching storms, gave time to shut the barn doors and secure the hayricks. If we care to act, then perhaps we may sustain the rhythms which we depend upon. Chris Packham speaks of finding grounding and retreat within his woods and in the company of animals. His deep appreciation and understanding links him into that security. Free from human commerce, free from our distortions, free from agendas, observe primitive cause and effect demonstrating the story of life. This one is ahead of us in adapting – FOX NEWS [UK]. TWEAK NEWS AUGUST 2020
We have seen Westdene Green giving space and relaxation to many more of us, particularly young cycle riders with families, during our social restrictions in the hot weather. So good.
The trees which were planted in March are all thriving, rowan “Olympic Flame” in the pic. just turning red. The original planting of berberis has benefitted from the improved light. We have completed the planting, so thanks to Katherine and friends “The Feminine Arboriculturalists” who put in hard work.
The contractors who manage the tree-work have had a busy time, as the diseases affecting elm and ash have been rampant in the City. We have lost ash and elm in Westdene Woods but nothing on the Green – touch wood. Ivy has finally been tackled in Westdene Woods with a chainsaw, after several limbs were torn off trees by high winds.
The surface of the Green was originally laid down and constituted as a bowling green with a sandy friable top. This recent dry weather [now and two years ago] has damaged the root-system of the grass and areas are now pitted and bare. Though grass will regrow, the deep-root system is now weak in parts and the surface is becoming uneven.
Our Christmas Wreath Event last year used flora from Stanmer Park, which is benefitting from major investment now. The Arboretum was planted by the Corporation [as was] in late 1940’s, but since has been neglected. Ahead of the opening celebrations, we are helping to record and display some of the beautiful trees growing there. Here’s a link to a few. https://photos.app.goo.gl/f9Hccsj6HPUHuLMv9
Finally, the minutes of TW E A C K A.G.M. and financial report are available if requested.

Thanks to Mike and Marcus from TWEACK and Neil's Nomads from Brighton & Hove Rangers, in early 2020 The Copse on The Green received a whole lot of TLC and some new trees. Come and see them and read the varieties on the labels. Introduce your children and look after them as they grow.
