We are a group of neighbours who care about Westdene Green, a beautiful green space in the suburbs of north Brighton, England.
​Friends of Westdene Green enables the wider community to come together, with The Barn at its heart, building connections and knowledge through a variety of enriching activities, social events and information sharing.

OUR STORY
​When in late 2015 a few neighbours noticed The Barn on Westdene Green being vacated and seeing it advertised for commercial let, they decided to step in.
In Jan 2016 the Friends of Westdene Green was formed, campaigning to protect The Barn and The Green by nominating them as Assets of Community Value.  We then successfully bid for a lease on The Barn.
In Aug 2016, FoWDG incorporated as a Charitable Community Benefit Society. A community benefit society promotes common values of social responsibility and equity, concern for community and co-operation amongst members. It also enables partnership work with other organisations to achieve common objectives. Charity registration also allows FoWDG to access some of the tax benefits enjoyed by charities.
We signed a lease for The Barn with Brighton & Hove City Council in Sept 2016 and now host a range of community events and activities.
We meet regularly to get to know one another better and discuss how we can help make life at Westdene Green even better for everyone.  
To make sure we represent the wishes of our community, we encourage local people to become Members and be part of our story.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE
We see our area as one where a sense of community is felt by everyone who lives here regardless of age, ability or circumstances. People feel supported, able to have a voice and act on their ideas and concerns.  
We manage a hub (The Barn) at the heart of the community which people feel proud of and connected with.
​People socialise regularly and there is lots of learning, laughter and fun.  A number of community events become regular fixtures. Creativity is encouraged. Different local organisations work with us for the good of local people.
The area is cared for and the open spaces and woodlands are well-used, respected and alive with wildlife.
